According to the Delors Commission (UNESCO 1996) “Education is at the heart of both personal & community development; its mission is to enable each of us develop all our talents to the full and to realize our creative potential, including being responsible for our own lives, without exception, and the achievement of our personal aims.”
Education is the process of teaching, training, and learning in order to develop skills and/or improve knowledge. This may be formal, informal or non-formal. Remember, education is also the transfer of culture (including dressing, norms, beliefs, and so on) from one generation to another.
Quality Education on the other hand involves making the best form of education available to everyone without any form of marginalization. Equity in education means that personal and social circumstances such as gender, ethnic origin or family backgroundare not obstacles to achieving educational potential and that all individuals reach at least a basic minimum level of skills.
A good quality education is one that provides all learners with capabilities they require to become economically productive, develop sustainable livelihoods, contribute to peaceful and democratic societies and enhance individual well-being. It, therefore, suffice to say that sustainable development begins with quality education.
Quality education puts the student at the centre of the learning process and helps them to reach their full potentials in life. For it to work, it requires the active participation of students. Quality Education is the single solution to many pungent problems that our nation and world is currently facing.
Quality education cannot be based on a blueprint that is applicable across all situations. The learning outcomes that are required vary according to context but at the end of the basic education cycle, education must include threshold levels of literacy and numeracy, basic scientific knowledge and life skills.
Here are some very important points to note about Quality Education;
- It is a fundamental human right that everyone deserves
- It provides the foundation for equity in society
- It is one of the most basic public services
- It, not only enlightens, but also empowers citizens and enables them to contribute to the social and economic development of their communities
- It can be achieved by giving adequate support to educational institutions and enhancing the capacities of local education authorities
Governments & other public authorities should ensure that quality education service is available to all citizens and that educational solutions are based on the real needs of the country and/or community because there is nothing like meeting a need. Education should be made available and accessible for all citizens from early childhood into adulthood without any form of marginalization.
The right to education is not only the right to access education but also the right to receive education of good quality to everyone. Therefore, Quality Education must not just be available and accessible but also acceptable and adaptable.
To make education available and accessible to all, everyone has to play their role in making it happen; government, educational institutions, families, etc. It is a collective responsibility and when we work together, we can indeed create a better, more sustainable world through quality education.
